KIPP Durham Partners with NCCU to Expand Mental Health Services

Durham and NCCU WEBSITEKIPP Durham is piloting a new partnership with North Carolina Central University’s School of Social Work through which KIPP Durham students with behavioral or emotional challenges will have access to free, interim-level mental health counseling services. Interns from NCCU’s School of Social Work will collaborate with teachers, school personnel, and others to design wrap-around treatment planning for students and their families. Shakeria McGuire, MSW, LCSW-A, a KIPP ENC alumna from KIPP Gaston’s Pride of 2011, is supervising the interns.

In addition to this ground-breaking partnership, KIPP ENC was recently awarded $180,000 through the NC School Mental Health Personnel Grant to hire a school counselor for each of our campuses in Durham, Halifax, and Gaston. We are incredibly grateful for this funding and the services our students will receive, and we look forward to creating a sustainable staffing model that allows us to provide the best in mental health services to meet the needs of all of our students.
